Part-time Community Organizer

The Sheff Movement Coalition (SMC) is looking for a part‐time Community Organizer to aid in the building and expansion of its School‐Based (SBAT) and Community ‐Based (CBAT) Advocacy Teams.   

The Sheff Movement Coalition’s SBATs and CBATs are student‐led groups, in partnership with educators and community members, created to advocate and bring awareness to today’s social justice issues. Candidates should be able to develop and build on a dynamic and holistic model of organizing, where youth and young adults will be offered programming that builds tangible skills in organizing and leadership development; fosters teambuilding and self‐development; and provides support in the overall mission of the SBATs/CBATs.

The ideal candidate possesses the following core competencies: 

∙ Strong community organizing skills or demonstrated success in organizing, strategizing, and following through on organizing campaigns.   

∙ Experience with mentoring and/or working directly with youth on issues related to racial and social justice.  


∙ Inspirational presence, reliable and flexible leadership, and enthusiasm for the Sheff Movement Coalition mission and vision. 

∙ Excellent individual and group communication skills (written, verbal and public speaking); ability to apply these skills across a range of relationships and environments, including with youth and SBAT participants, community and board members and other social justice stakeholders.   

∙ Ability to handle a variety of projects and assignments at once with attention to detail.  


∙ Excellent time management, project management, and delegation skills and willingness to embrace adaptability.   

∙ Ability to apply creative and critical thinking to improve existing programming.   

∙ Ability to work with persons of various racial, ethnic, sexual orientation, ability, age and socio‐economic backgrounds. 

∙ Strong technology skills, including competency using social media platforms. 

∙ Demonstrated communication proficiency – written, verbal and public speaking. 

Duties and Responsibilities:  

∙ Lead relationship‐building and collaborations with youth, public school personnel and social justice movement organizations.   

∙ Organize and implement SBAT/CBAT activities in schools and school districts and the communities in which SBATs/CBATs are located. 

∙ Document Sheff Movement Coalition (SMC) SBAT/CBAT activities. 

∙ Attend SMC weekly check‐in and monthly meetings.

The SMC Community Organizer is a contracted consultant position, contracted twenty (20) hours a week, June 15, 2022 – January 31, 2023. Pay commensurate with experience. The position has room for expansion to additional hours and duties, as well as extended time frame and conversion to permanent staff, based on additional fund development that the SMC is working to support.
